I'm in the market for a heatsink and fan that I can set on top of my new xp 1800.

I keep seeing these copper and aluminum shims. What are these for? I saw some where not to be used w/ the xp series. Do I need one oh these?
Any information will help
Thanks

I think the shims are used to provide better support for when installing the HSF...XP cores have been known to crack due to off balance pressure from heatsinks during installation, the shims just provides a more level surface in addition to those rubber pads...Some sites don't suggest you use copper shims (there are non-conductive shims) since there is a chance you could short the circuitry on the chip and fry your CPU. I don't think the shims do anything as far as cooling is concerned...

Shims server no cooling purpose. They're designed to keep the HS from tilting when mounting the HS on the die. They're very handy when mounting waterblocks and you have to screw down a bolt to apply pressure.

...What they said...
Some of the best are very cheap... so my advice, get one anyway.
