they actually are designed so the heatsink won't crack the core. but some of them are so uneven until the heatsink has no contact with the proc causing the proc to burn. conclusion: i wouldn't get them

Just remember to mount the heatsink properly by applying pressure on the clip and not the heatsink and you don't need to worry about crushing the core which is the sole purpose the shim serves.

I've got them on both of my XP's and they don't hurt. Dunno if they helped, but they didn't hurt.

Just make absolutely certain that they are a bit shorter than the CPU core. Otherwise they WILL hurt. I had to shave one down because there was a bump in it that put it taller than the core.

They also the heat around the core area. I have a nice one made out of mica if anyone wants to buy it.
