CPU runs hotter when OCing memory

I just got i7 860, by default it supports ddr3 1333 and the memory is at 1.5v for this frequency. The cpu core temp at this speed with stock cooler is 35-40 C. When I increase the frequency to 2000 the voltage changes to 1.65 and now the CPU runs hotter.
55-60 even without any load.

I'm new to OCing, is this normal or should change it back to 1333.

Thanks!

better revert back to stock settings bro... your i7 has a lot of power and no need for OC'ing...

I7 has an integrated memory controller, overclocking your memory puts extra stress on that as well which in turn would increase the overall cpu temp. That would be why your seeing higher temps.

I'm changing it back to 1333 until I figure it out how to do it properly. I'm guessing lot of people will have the same issue soon.

Wow that is quite a temp increase, but it is with the stock cooler. An aftermarket cooler may make the increase less/not noticable. Did you have to increase the memory controller voltage? I believe there was a setting for that on the i5/new i7.

My mobo (gigabyte p55-ud4p) has profiles in it. All I did is turn on the extreme profile and then memory is clocked at maximum. I may be able to do 1600 manually..once I figure it out. Thanks for your input. Somehow I get the feeling lynnfield is not for overclockers.

Yeah theres no need to OC the ram. You're not going to see any performance boost. You can OC the CPU if you want, but theres no need to clock the RAM higher than necessaru

I get it now, I couldn't figure out why you jacked up your voltage on the memory so high .

Chance's are that extreme profile is jacking up a whole lot more than just memory voltage. You very well may have way more overclocking headroom than you think if you can figure a way to adjust everything seperately from eachother.

Newer chips are getting more and more complicated to overclock so don't give up.

On taking a closer look using real temp 3.0 temps are fluctuating a lot between 35-56. I noticed whenever turbo is up (cpz frequency goes above 3.0 ghz) temps are around 55. I'm guessing this normal for this type cpu any one else have the same experience with these ?

I wonder if when you OCed the memory the mobo also OCed the CPU? What did CPU-Z show then?

On my i7 920 if I only change BCLK and nothing else, the mobo automatically changes memory and everything else to match the OC. Kind of makes some logic then that if just memory is OCed then mobo might change everything else to match?

Also, I see that Real Temp does not read i7 860 correctly!

It shows you are running at "16788.29 MHz" ... uhmm, that's 16.8 GHz  New world record!

No its not world record ..I think thats the effective (add all the cores together). I kinda fixed this issue by buying an air cooler coolermaster 212 plus. Im very happy with the temps now. no load -20-22 full load - 51-52. I used dual 120mm fans with this cooler and AS5, also decided against OCing memory. (I havent seen any real advantage ).

sacrilege!!! burn this heretic!!! go spread your evil ideas elsewhere!!!

but it certainly is tougher to push up the bus than to push up the multi...

I was just about to suggest that...

I also have a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P, a core i7 860, and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus.

I have Mushkin PC3-1600 RAM rated at 7-7-7-20.

I am currently running at 180 * 21 = 3.78 GHz. The memory is running at PC3-1440, which is actually underclocked.

I'm less than 24 hours into overclocking, but it looks like this combo will get us around 4 GHz, which is all I'm looking for.

Edit: Just cranked BCLK to 190, so now I'm running 190 x 21 = 3.99 GHz. I'm running Prime95 with 8 threads, and EasyTune6 says that the CPU is at 51 degrees C.

I learned this less in the Core 2 Duo days. I bought PC2-1066 RAM, which at the time was the fastest available. I ended up running the RAM at PC2-800 speeds.

Right now I think the DDR3 sweet spot is DDR3-1600. NewEgg has the Mushkin DDR3-1600 (7-7-7-20, 1.9V) at $100 for 4GB. The DDR3-2000 RAM is more expensive, has higher latencies, and would be wasted at my current OC settings.

Thanks for the input, I might try this over the weekend on the other hand I might not even need it. I havent seen the cpu go above 50% for anything I do (prolly because of turbo) most of the time its running 4 or 6 cores ranging anywhere from 2.8 to 3.6 GHz. I will try it just for the fun not because I need it.

Could you report back what load temp is with Real Temp 3.0 or Core Temp?
