CPU running very hot, even with a Thermaltake Volcano 7...

Ok, I upgraded from a Thermaltake Super Orb to a Volcano 7 on my Athlon 1.1 gHz CPU. I've spotted one problem though: There's been virtually no temperature decrease on the CPU.

Nothing is overclocked, and it's still running at around 47 degrees Celcius idle, and 50 with a full load! What on earth is going on?! I have some Thermal Compound on the CPU, but that didn't help whatsoever... any ideas?

Thermaltake HSF suck arse, but that's a little high considering the size of the Volcano 7, are you sure you have it seated properly? Get a Vantec 6040, thermalright SK6, or another pure copper HSF instead.

It's seated alright... I just checked 😛

In tests I've seen on the net, faster CPUs run MUCH cooler with the same heatsink... wtf is going on?

Other factors weigh in.

Mobos vary greatly in their heat measurement accuracy.

Air circulation in the case (flow pattern, fans).

What is the delta between case temp and cpu temp?

Time to get an AX7 and a Delta Screamer 🙂

Actually, an AX7 plus any 80mm fan will cool really well, even an AX7 and a Panaflo L1A.

that's warm?

My athlon xp 1700 runs around 53-55 w/no load and 61-63 w/a heavy work load..

stupid retail hsf combos!

Oh well, don't worry about it... my motto is, if it works and works stable, who gives a damn what the temperature is.

That temp(50c) is fine. When I switched my retail hs/fan for the Volcano 7, my temps dropped 10c. It's a good hs/fan, SocketA temp probes are another matter though.

A thermalright AX-7 and a Mechatronics 50 CFM fan will put your idle temps around 96 F and 100% load at about 100 F (34 C and 36 C). And that is about the best you are going to do anywhere. That is about $45.00 worth of good insurance. I have that combo and it is great.

My ThermalTake 7+ performs really well. Im running an XP 1800+ and never get over 46C full load.
I havent tested how low I can get to on full load but 45C high is respectable I believe.

you can't say that with any degree of certainty. The CPU temp depends on the ambient temp, and the ambient temp also depends on the CPU temp to a certain extent if you don't have good airflow around your CPU area. RamzaBeoulve, what case temps are you getting?

Ive had my share of fast fans and giant heatsinks... and IMHO, thats about 45.00 worth of REALLY REALLY UNNECISSARILLY LOUD INSURANCE.

Dude, for that 1.1 which is one of the hotter of the athlons produced, 50 degrees under full load is no big deal at all. Are you crashing? Then why worry. I say, open up some airflow in your case, better exhaust, maybe some better thermal compound like Arctic silver... see if that will help you out anymore...its a lot cheaper than 45 bucks.

Dont get me wrong, Im running Alpha 6035s on my Dual P-IIIs, and yeah, a high CFM fan will take your temps down, but I didnt have a problem at all oging from 46cfm to 26cfm... in fact, htere wasnt that much difference at all.. even when OCd to 150... I honestly think that when u move that much air, you start to lose the effect of it....

DrunkenKaos,

Temps are highly dependant on various factors, the main one being motherboard and how its socket-thermistor reading is compensated/read, and then ambient system temp. Therefore, unless you know that every factor is the same as yours, your statement can be highly erroneous.

RamzaBeoulve,

What is your system temp? What motherboard are you using?

The V7 is's really a bad HS and it should do well if you have good air flow in teh case. Use low RPM 80mm for intake and exhaust if possible. As mentioned, ambient temps are a seriuos consideration also; you can't cool it if the room isn't cool. And 50C isn't bad at all, but if you are concerned about it I believe you can do better by making checking the intake and exhaust. I get 37C - 45c with 80mm intake and exhaust with the V7 on my XP. Also... I swapped the smart fan supplied by Tt with a smart fan from Antec. The system is quiet and cools well.
