CPU running too hot?

Hrmm. I made a post before about my watercooling system not cooling very well on my e6700. The processor would idle at about 40c and I did everything to try and get that down and gave up cause found out later that watercooling system sucked anyway (gigabyte watercooling system).

OK. So yeah, I bought a Thermaltake CL-0114

I put that on along with some good ol' arctic silver and my idle temps are 44c according to that TAT program, and 45c according to the software my Asus board comes with.

Does anybody else have issues like this? I know it's not my case. I went from an X2 system to this core 2 duo system and the X2 idled around 30c.

All the specs are:

ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Intel core 2 duo e6700
eVGA Geforce 8800GTX

Is it just my processor likes to run hot or what? HELP!

Those aren't bad temperatures at all, unless you're not overclocked. If you're at stock speed I'd expect temperatures a few degrees lower than that. My Athlon 64 idled at 51 and load at ~59 on its stock cooler when I had it. 40s and 50s is nothing to worry about.

it's been re-applied 2 times when i had the water cooling setup and yet again when i put the new thermaltake air cooler on there. i'm down to my last little bit of arctic. i really don't think it's the arctic. :(

You may be a victim of a concave IHS. Does your chip have this problem?

Also, you can get a better air cooler than the Big Typhoon, though that should not be an issue when running at stock speeds.

what exactly is concave IHS?

also note that even the water cooling setup i had on here wasn't any better than this. that water cooling kit wasn't the best, but it still worked. it's on my friend's a64 3500 now keeping it a lot cooler than my processor :(

IHS = Integrated Heat Spreader. It's the nickel-and-copper plate Intel solders on top of their current CPUs to help spread heat out from a tiny little silicon core onto a larger surface so that it can be more evenly transferred to a heatsink, contact plate, or other heat-dissipation device. They've been in use since at least the Pentium 4 era on a variety of chips.

The IHS is supposed to be flat, but some IHSs on Core 2 chips came out bent like a concave lens:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_%28optics%29#Types_of_lenses

Though honestly, whether something is concave or convex is a matter of perspective (such as is the case with the meniscus lens and the convex-concave lens).

Long story short, some of the Core 2 IHSs are not flat. About the only thing you can do to correct this is RMA the processor (if they'll let you) or lap the IHS for a flatter contact surface.

wonderful. i guess if i don't oc i should be fine. i haven't read anyone with my heat issues, but i also don't see anyone with the e6700, usually the e6600 or lower. oh well, i'm gonna be upgrading to a quad fairly soon anyway. hope i don't have the same issue. :(

thanks for the help, even though the news was bad.

Well, not everyone has a concave IHS, but it's something you should check. There is a remedy if you do have one (two actually: RMA or lapping).
