You wonder why this cpu is running warm ? This system actually works ! I am upgrading them. They haven't cleaned out this case in 4 years....

stuff like this is why I want to go to water next build. I get tired of all the dust in my case and it affecting my graphics card overclock.
edit: is that an ECS nForce-3A?

don't you love getting these machines to fix! my brother's 'puter was so bad the cpu fan wouldn't spin b/c of the grime build-up -- (both he and his wife smoke and they have 2 cats & a dog.)

Yeah looks like an old ECS board.

Believe it or not I've seen worse.

That is crazy. It looks like the insulation we had in the ceiling of our house. Put muslin or something over the fans so that most of the dust gets caught on the outside

Sick.
When I crack a case and see stuff like that, the fans are usually frozen solid.

Its an ECS 755-a2 motherboard. I will have to fire it up later and see what cpu it is. I thought it was a a64-3000.

This is why I like a ATX chassis with filters. (It amazing how much dust collects on my Antec P160 grill)

Is that the heatsink hook standing upright on the right side of the pic next to the heatsink? Was it even seated properly?

I've done some cleanouts of systems for friends before. Nothing quite this bad though. There was always a night and day difference when I did a cleanout - this would be night and day as well, but there'd be some permanent discoloration (at least I'd guess to think).

At least it looks like the cpu fan is screw mounted, those cpu fans that are not can make cleaning the fins on the heatsink itself difficult.

Jeesh :)

Usually if I get a really nasty PC, it's just got tons of giant dust balls in it...never a coating like that.

I did see one PC, once, that looked like the one in your picture, except instead of dust it was white thermal grease. Apparently the guy emptied the whole tube onto his CPU.

How does going water prevent dust build up? What you need is dust filters for intake case fans. Cases like Antec 182 have them inbuilt, and because of it no dust can get it. My friend uses this case and hes had no dust problem ever since the day he bought the case. On the other hand ive been having to clean dust every once in awhile... cant wait til i get my hands on the FT02.

LOL..

i remember when i was in college and did pc repair for friends, i ran across a pal who owned a car body shop.

You guys know how much dust is in a car body shop.

I walked in korean... by the time i finished cleaning his computer and redid the OS, i came out as a black man.

:X

<do not mean this racially in any way.... i was litterally covered up with so much dust and soot, i came out black>

Now I have to go home an completely rebuild my computer to remove every spec of dust in the system.

I see a lot of nasty computers where I work. People always ask me why their computer is showing errors like "Thermal Event" and "CPU overheat protection"

Being an old Hot Rodder, I have an automotive air compressor in my garage. And in my PC repair business, I use it a lot for blowing old machines out. In fact, no computer comes inside my house until I blow it out.

I've seen computers like that many times, in fact I wear a face mask when I blow them out.

Thats exactly what I do... I did it to this one. You should have seen the dust cloud when I first blew into the case.

I don't have a garage to use (apartment life, sigh) so I ghetto clean with a shop-vac. Hold shop vac a bit above the canned air spray and watch the dust tornado, lol.
