Hi,

I just took a look at my friends computer and was kinda concerned that his CPU maybe running too hot. It is a P4 2.0 ghz that runs between 55-60 degrees C. The case temp runs around 40 degrees. I was wondering if this is normal for this type of processor. The fan is a stock fan that came with intel so it shouldnt be that bad. Any thoughts and any advice?

Check to make sure the heatsink/fan unit is latched down properly, and that the fan is running (unless it's some kind of fanless OEM setup). If the air temperature in the case really is 40C, try to reduce that a bit, too... sometimes people coop their computer up in one of those evil computer desks, for instance. What kind of system is this, a user-built one or store-bought?

its a user built..not quite sure what the MB is but there is an ati radeon graphics card and 2 hard drives...however the hard drives are attached to the bottom of the case, which i thought was odd but the case is designed to do so. There is only 1 fan in the rear...none in the front. My guess is the fan is crappy and there should be an intake fan....he doesn't like the computer loud. Which panaflo model would be good to use?

if it were my computer, i would take a dremel to that puppy. if you add two 120mm fans (one for intake, the other for exhaust) you should have case temps in the mid to high 20s. if you want to go all-out, put the intake 120mm fan directly over the cpu heatsink, and run a duct straight from the 120mm fan to the top of the fan on the heatsink. it dropped my cpu temps by 10C :)

oh, and if you want it quiet, get a low rpm fan. i have 2 enermax adjustables, and when they're set to their slow setting they're barely audible.

oh, and you should install thermal paste (arctic silver 3) on the cpu, and make sure that the heatsink/fan isn't clogged up with dust.

If you ask me, there is no problem with those temps. Especially if it is a Willie P4, that is not bad at all. I wouldn't worry about it, now once you pass 60C then you might want to take a look, but I wouldn't concern yourself about it. Plus, remember P4's will auto-underclock themselves if they heat up too much.

If there are stability problems, I would bet on the RAM or motherboard.
