I *hear* AMD is integrating a heat spreader plate (Similar to the metal cap used on K62/3s) into future TBird/Palomino designs..

Thoughts?

Seeing that Intel has also gone back to using heat spreaders with their Pentium 4 and new Tualatin processors I wouldn't doubt it.

AMD processors really need the extra protection given that many people have cracked their cores due to excessive force. If you have ever looked at a K6-2 without it's metal cover, it looks almost like an Athlon or Duron processor...

Now people are going to start prying that thing off so they can have the "advantage" of the heat sink directly on the slug.

If you forked for the copper shim then you have something of a heat spreader already. ;)

It is a good thing to use a heat spreader.

Madrat - I hope you are inferring the fact that the copper shims just keep people from cracking the core, and otherwise do nothing for cooling....

They should be nice and put on a Cusil spreader (Copper/Silver alloy with higher thermal conductivity than either of them), seeing as how much we are paying for dirty sand (bad joke)........:D

I have no idea why this works that way it does, but my water cooler works better with the shim on. I have a spring loaded lexan hold down so I can adjust the pressure and the distribution. I tried with and without several times and came to the conclusion that either the block won't set correctly on the core without the shim or the shim is providing cooling because it is 10C cooler with it on. I refuse to say that the shim is actually aiding in cooling but it is providing some form of assistance towards that goal, either in allowing me to be more confident with tightening the nuts on the holddown or in straightening the block on the core or the unmentionable. So if it is simply because of keeping it straight then I am all for a nice big heat spreader right on top of the core.

I think that would be a major disadvantage. First off it would cover up all the bridges. Second it would impair cooling. Lastly if you're careful you don't crack cores anyway:p

If done correctly then there would be the tinest of ceramic between the actual die and the heat spreader. You could move more heat and get a better more sure contact with your heatsink for more efficient removal of heat. Just like in heatsinks...more is better.............:)

The number of thermal interfaces would be the same, but the one that touches the heatsink won't be a insulator like it is now.
