CPU Reporting wrong temp

I had a Heatsink trimmed down to put a Therma Electric Cooler under it. It works in idle mode reporting a nice 16C cpu temp but when at full load the CPU always reports 74C, only time it changes is when i take off the side of my case then it goes down to 70C. The CPU cant be running at this temp cause ive left it running when the temp said it was at 74C for almost 24 hours straight. Dont think any CPU could run at 74C for 24 hours. I replaced it with a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ and the temps are reported fine at 35C idle and 54C under full load. Any one else ran into sensors reporting wrong cpu temps with Thermal Electric coolers?

CPUs can run at 74Cs. Not that they should, but they can last severals years at that temp.

I doubt your temperature is wrong. 74c is within the limits for most Intel and AMD processors. The biggest problem you had is the misuse of a TEC. Did you read up on TECs before you installed one? It is quite possible to achieve good temperatures with them, but very difficult. The reason being that the TEC simply moves heat from the CPU to the HS, the HS must then dissapitate the heat from the CPU on top of the heat from the TEC(whatever the wattage of the TEC is the heat ouput). One of the most effective ways to run TECs is with good watercooling. If you think this is wrong try touching the HS of your Volcano 7+ now, reinstall the TEC and touch the HS on it. I bet you it will be extremely hot.

I touched the heatsink when the TEC was on it and it wasnt that hot. I also have BIOS set to Alarm at 60C and even with the TEC on and it saying the temp was 74C the Alarm never went off. Ive tried different Heatsinks and Fans and got one to get the cpu temp past 60C and the Alarm did sound. Now ether my BIOS is getting the CPU temp from some place else or some how with the TEC on the CPU temp gets to 74C without tripping the Alarm.
