CPU Reads Wrong, Windows Down HELP

Ok so I have a Shuttle Ultra AN35 Motherboard with an XP2600 chip in it. If I set the FSB to 166Mhz it reads the chip right as an XP2600+ but windows won't load it gives me a file missing error. If I set the FSB to 133 it reads my chip as a XP2000+ but windows works fine. What do i do???

The mobo isn't reading your CPU wrong. But that's besides the point. The simplest explanation is that one of your sticks of RAM does not like running at 166mhz. You haven't given us info abou the RAM (speed and timings) so this is an uneducated guess.

The first thing you should try is removing all of the RAM except for a single stick. Set the FSB to the desired 166mhz. Set the RAM timings to a relaxed setting (usually 2.5-3-3). Then boot into Memtest86 and let it run for a while. If that stick passes, replace it with another one, and so on, until you've: a) verfied that all of the sticks work fine individually, b) verify that one or more of the sticks produces memory errors at 166mhz.

Report back what you find.

Ok I am an admitted newb here, what is Memtest86 where do I get it?

Memtest86 is diagnostic proggie that tests your ram. IIRC After you d/l it, you unzip it onto a floppy (prolly can use cd if no floppy). Set floppy as first boot device. Reboot and the pc will go right to the floppy and the test starts. It doesn't stop, it will run continuosly until you stop it.

One error is too many. At a minimum let it run for an hour or two for your purposes (I run it for 24 hrs when testing an OC for stability).

Get it HERE and read the instructions.

Good Luck with it

Set your CPU/MEM ratio to 5:4. That would leave your CPU FSB at 166 and your mem at 133. If it runs okay there, then your mem won't do 166.
