CPU + RAM

Hi to all,

I've got a oldish machine sitting at home, about 4 years old mesh system

p4, 1.4ghz
384mb ram
40gig harddrive
geforce 2 ultra 64mb
win 2k

I got the machine pretty much when p4 was new, hence low speed, I was wondering whats the highest possible P4 chip i can put in this existing socket, or is there more information that is required first? Is it unreasonable to think of fitting a 2.8 or 3ghz cpu?

Also concerning the ram, I have pc800 Rambus ram. Is this ram getting old or how does it rate currently with the new stuff, not in the know at all!
Its quite rare and haven't seen info about it much around, and know its not very comerical.

My plan is to change the cpu to a faster one, and put in a new gpu...not decided which yet, but someting for about 100-150pounds.

Thanks in advance for any info to my quiries, much appreciated.

Unfortunately it probably uses Socket 463 and P4s changed to the smaller Socket 478 around 2Ghz. Unfortunately since the older socket was phased out long ago you might be hard pressed to find a compatible processor. If you really need the upgrade you are looking at a new system.

I can help with that. Could you start by downloading the Intel Processor ID tool from here, run it, and look at the second tab in the results and report the CPU ID string, as read vertically (for a PentiumIII 933 it might be 0686, for example). I'm trying to figure out whether your motherboard uses Socket 478 or Socket 423 here.

Bigger picture: unless your motherboard can be confirmed to accept Socket 478 Northwood-core processors like perhaps a Pentium4 2.4A, I'd say it's not a good idea to invest any further money in a computer that uses the obsolete RDRAM memory unless you can find the parts secondhand for a very good price. Socket 423 is a definite "abandon ship" signal, and if it's Socket 478 but only supports S478 Williamettes, same thing. IMHO.

Welcome to the Forums, evosix 🙂

Thanks for the replies,

Kinda confirmed what I was thinking about the system being dated.

Currently not at home to run the Intel Processor ID tool, but will do in a few weeks after exams, when I get home from uni.

Bought a sony vaio which keeps me going, will make my pc feel even slower when I get back home!
