im looking for a decent combo(the cheaper the better) for a cousin of mine, preferably with integrated graphics and sound(won't be used for gaming). if someone can recommend me some hardware and sites to buy it, i'd really appreciate it.

thanks

Just something I threw together at Newegg:

Mobo Gigabyte km266 $49.99

CPU Athlon XP 2000+ $57.00

RAM Buffalo PC2100 CAS 2.5 512mb $73.00

Total $179.99

There are many other mobos you could go with, I just chose that 1 cause it was the first I came across and I chose Gigabyte for Price/Quality purposes.

For the most part, I like the choices above, except I think that for a just $4 more, you can pick up some quality PC3200 instead. Of course, you won't be running at 400mhz for the memory, but you can always use it later should you want to upgrade. Besides, it's only $4 more.

I really like the Kreton Value brand that newegg carries. Great stuff for the price.

MSI KM4M-L - $57. (Has P4 Aux power connector, so doesn't need more than a good 250W PSU - save more $s.)
If you want slightly better - the Abit VA-10 or 11 (11 has Firewire but is hard to find - these also have P4 Aux).
Duron 1600 - $39. (Surprisingly fine performance - see comparo of budget processors over on AT pages)
Thermal Integration V77L HSF - $9. (Low profile, excellent performance)
Apacer, Kreton or Crucial 256MB PC2700 DDR - $38-40. x2= $80. max. I like to use two modules instead of one so in case one goes, you won't be SOL, but one would do just as well if it saves money.
Total: $185. + $4. shipping = $189. max. All from newegg.com. Or you can get most of the same from Monarch Computer who also provide tech support and have an excellent ResellerRating - if you want something more than just a box-pusher like newegg. Since newegg has free shipping on the Duron, you could get just that there and it wouldn't change the total any.
. I think that most people would be in hog heaven with a setup like this.
.bh.

You can get a great combo for your budget!

$60.90 BIOSTAR M7NCG-400 (Nforce 2 IGP)
$84 AMD XP 2600+ (Includes cooling fan)
$84 Kingston PC3200 2x 256MB

Total $228

link

edit: For your cousin's use though, CPU speed is not that important, nor is the integrated GF4 MX of the NF2 IGP. Something like this will do fine. 256MB is the minimum amount of ram you want to have, but 512MB is recommended if running Windows XP for better performance. Try to go with PC3200 ram because it costs only a little more compared to it's PC2700 and PC2100 counterparts and will hold up much better in the future.

$46.2 BIOSTAR M7VIG PRO (KM266 IGP SDR/DDR)
$47 AMD XP 1500+ (Includes cooling fan)
$43.59 CORSAIR PC3200 256MB

Total $136.79

link

Biostar makes great boards. Have had no problems with them. Friend has been running Biostar NF2 IGP on his lan box for a year now. And cousin has been using the Biostar KM266 for 1.5 yrs. Stable, and quick.

Mwave is a reputable online store. So is Newegg. Check reseller ratings before buying anywhere.

Motherboard: EPoX EP-8RGMI ($78)
Processors: AMD Barton 2500+ Retail ($80)
Memory: 2x256MB Crucial PC2700 ($80)

Total Shipped: $238 (Shipping was to MD)

If you need to cut costs a little bit, then I would go with a slower CPU. If you dropped down to a 2000+ the total becomes $215 including shipping. If you do go with a slower CPU, then I would still keep the PC2700 memory so that you can upgrade to a 333MHz FSB Barton later down the line.

Did something similar for my parents....seems to work just fine for them

ASUS KM400 A7V8X-MX SE* - retail at newegg $58.99

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ "Thoroughbred" - retail at newegg $72.00

Mushkin Blue Line 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2100 cas2-3-3 - retail at newegg $94.00

total = about 225

*also has agp slot so you can upgrade your video later on if you wish.

Whats wrong with that ? ASUS MB, XP2400 is fine, and that memory is fine.

That is a MAJOR rip for PC2100 ram... make sure you don't get that... Buffalo sells 512MB PC3200 for cheaper than this.

So what did you get?

I have wanted to come back to this thread earlier and suggest something else. Here's a link: PCCips M810D Duron 2000

It is fully integrated CPU, Video, Audio, LAN, has 2 PCI slots and ram slots for SDRAM and DDR. It doesn't have an AGP slot and the cpu is not upgradeable(soldered to board), but the complete system is $118.45 CDN, approx $70-80 US. ECS also has a number of similar systems, some even include 256mb of Integrated DDR ram.
