CPU Question

I took off my pep fan the other day and put on the right fan for the right cpu. I put my fop38 onto my duron 600. I took a look at my chip and I noticed that edges around the core are breaking off. My chip still works, but I mean is that normal for the edges of the chip to be what do you call it ... like ... crumbling apart? I think it may have been because of my other hsf. Something like it doesn't give it enough pressure onto the chip so it wasn't doing a good job at keeping it cool. I'm guessing that the crumbling of the core is not very good. What could be causing this? Please help!

I wonder if the chipped edges might be a result of all the pressure exerted when you are trying to clip the HSF on. I'd think that is one reason that the four pads are installed, at least on the retail Duron, and that manufacturers have thermal pads installed on their HSFs, instead of using the thermal grease...
