CPU question

I had been thinking about this over the afternoon while stuck in my garage and I'm gonna pop the Q here. Is it even a good idea to go with, say an Athlon x2 CPU as opposed to a 3200 or FX-55, if the rig is built mainly for gaming? I know the duel core chips help with multi-tasking, which might be nice as this is also a college computer I'm planning on building, but would there be any significant benefit from using a duel core chip or would it be more practical to just stick with a FX-55 or something?

Whoa... I wouldn't call either of those really "practical" (price)

a single core, 3000+ or 3200+ would be great. Dual cores are...very expensive. Hell, go for the Fx-57.
