Just doing a bit of research for a friend upgrading, I was looking at cost vs performance on US review sites when I realised the pricing didn't match with what we have over here. Usually, we pay $US converted to $AU, +20% other side of the world tax.

(AU prices from umart.net.au, US from newegg.com)

AMD 6000+
AU: $235
US: $229
What AU prices usually are: $267AU +20% = $320AU

e6600
AU: $310
US: $222
What AU prices usually are: $259AU +20% = $310AU

So, Intel prices line up perfectly, but AMD is cheaper than in US even before the extra that's usually added to all computer parts.

So, is AMD being nice to us, or are we getting black market stuff from Asia?

Hmm, someone on another forum has told me Aus got their price cuts early. It's good to be able to recommend some AMD chips for a change. Still, the e2xxx series reign supreme for budget OC, and e6700 is still my recommended for top end.

Yah, been like that for the past 2 weeks already. ;)

The official date for AMD pricecuts is July 9. Intel pricecuts are scheduled for the 22nd, should be some bargain chips coming up for everybody (in the world ;) ) in the next few weeks.

can anybody explain why cpu's, videocards and such always cost more in for example Europe, and Australia, then in the US ? I pay roughly 130% for the same product compared to you guys. All the rebates and nice offers newegg has must be to their size and scale advantages they have over smaller company's, but 130% over all product is ridiculous.

Is this due to import fees and what not ? Don't intel/AMD/ATI/NVIDIA have fabs and such in Europe ?

That's nothing. I saw some Obus Forme backpacks on sale on amazon.com and there's nothing I could do about it. I'm in Canada and I tried to order and couldn't. I mean they were on sale for $15 US. And a Vantec Nexus NXP-301 at newegg for $12. Well, I couldn't find it at that price. I paid like $45 CDN. I also paid like $42 CDN for my Obus Forme Hendon backpack. Odd thing is, I ended up ordering a Obus Forme Yarbo because the Hendon is pretty small, but it's an ideal size for work and just walking around in the city. The Yarbo would be more for travelling etc.

Honestly, I think it's because they don't care. We get charged more for movies, electronics, cd's (look at the nine inch nails blog for TR's take on the gouging). I mean, who in their right mind would buy retail Vista here?
The smart money in Aus imports everything it can.

Supply and Demand, different taxing structures, import/export policies, etc..., etc...

As far as retail sales of consumer electronics the US is the 800 pound gorilla/(walmart) of the world. The vast volumes combined with relatively low sales tax and low corporate tax rates create a buyers market. Large retailers can buy at heavlily discounted prices on huge quantities and make a few bucks on each unit and still profit nicely, and the competition is fierce which helps keep the price low.
