CPU price wars coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

Although the pundits I've been reading state that CPU prices will stay stable for the next several months, I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that (IMHO) soon after Intel inaugurates it's August 14th price cuts, AMD will do the same before the end of the month.

If memory serves, AMD just had a round of price cuts, however, it was not across the board - so to speak. This time I think AMD will cut their most popular sellers in order to stay current with the inroads they seem to making against Intel's market share.

Also, isn't AMD's new FAB suppose to come on-line very soon - if not already?
Additionally, don't dismiss VIA's newest iteration of their C7? (Esther?) from the pricing mix. I think it's a 2Ghz-and-up chip.
Additionally, Transmeta may soon become a player.
And lastly, China is building one or more FABs and will eventually buy, beg, "borrow" or steal the latest FAB know-how as they shake off the "intellectual strangle-hold" that remains over them from the west. (I'm betting on #4.)

MooGoo,
I really did like the bunny and e-mailed it to my daughter, yesterday (or the day before).

We had a baby bunny in the back yard (along with a snake, flocks of birds, raccoons-at-night and a host of other "wildlife"). The "baby" now appears full-grown and we are hoping it's a "he". (Or would that be hopping it?s a he.) 😀😀😀

when they sell x2 at $150 then...

They will rule the world! (well maybe not, but they'll be a little closer)

They'll get pretty darn close lol. Who would want to buy an Intel chip then?? After all, low price in the dual-core range is the only thing Intel has going for them right now.

I think the low price is not much of an asset with the new mobo, exspensive memory, and bad performance, considering the 3800+'s price and performance.

AMD chips are priced quite a bit lower than their comparable Intel chips (except maybe the dual cores), so even if Intel lowers prices across the board AMD wont have to do so. VIA is insignificant performance-wise and will continue to be so unless it decides to make the chips bigger and add more execution hardware and cache to them. Hell, they advertise their 30mm^2 die size as a benefit, but it only helps power consumption because there are way less transistors to power. It has a longer pipeline than the A64 and I doubt their branch prediction and memory access latency is even close to AMD's. Transmeta is now officially whoring out it's engineers, so I wouldnt expect anything to come out of them any time soon, though I truly liked their Crusoe chips.

FAB36 will lead to lower production costs, but considering that AMD has been striving to increase its ASPs, I doubt much of the cost reduction will be passed onto consumers, hell, we didnt get a much of a price reduction when they went 90nm, so I dont expect that to happen this time, either. What I do expect is for them to invest more into R&D, which would benefit us in the end, though indirectly.
