My CPU fan died in my conputer. It just shut down and wouldnt turn back on. I messed with it, changed the power supply and unplugged everything and got it back up. I ordered a new fan, but wanted to use the computer. Pointed a fan in it and it worked great. Well I forgot and didnt turn the fan on and it got to hot and shut off again. I cant get it back on for anything now. Tried a new power supply and another CPU, but to no avail. Im looking for the wise opinions of those of you here to give me some suggestions. Think maybe I fried the MB because of this?

Thanks for your help and time,

Tony

ECS K7S5A Rev 1 MB
2 512 Meg Micron DDS 2100 memory
128 meg FX 5200 vid card
just bought a AMD 2600 XP processor, but could only run it at 1900 speed, guess cause the fan I had was crapping out, should have been a sign I guess.
40 gig HD (western Digital) 5200

Good info. Unfortunately, the K7S5A isn't even supposed to be used with any of the 333MHz-based processors like your 2600+ probably is (there was a 266MHz-based 2600+ but it's pretty rare).

:(

The K7S5A rev. 1 doesn't have thermal-shutdown circuitry, so it's probable that the CPU was destroyed. The mobo might have taken damage, or the PSU might have put itself on a "time-out." Best you can hope for is that if you unplug the PSU from the wall and wait about five minutes, it'll be ready to try again.

While you're waiting, also reset the board's CMOS. What's your other CPU that you were testing with, by the way?

The CPU that was in it at the time that the fan got to hot was a 266MhZ 2600+ XP

The one that I tried after it wouldnt turn back on was a 1.33 ghz AMD Athlon.

Neither will back it boot up. Going to try clearing CMoS and unplugging for awile.

Damn it sucks having a puter to use, but cant really so anything on, hehe

I had a mobo kick the bucket for no reason at all, so I know what a drag it can be :( Good luck!

Still no luck getting it fired up! :(

If I dont get it going angain, I guess the first thing Ill try it the MB. Any suggestions as to which to get?

Id like to still be able to use the 2100 DDR I just bought, but would also like to be able to expand more then what I was currently able to.

Thanks for your time,

Tony

You might take a look at the Shuttle MN31N. It's a microATX nForce2 IGP board that has the full-featured MCP-T southbridge with the powerful nVidia audio processors. It happens to have dual VGA ports for its onboard video, as well as an AGP slot.

Being an nForce2 board with the graphics northbridge, it would officially support only up to the 333MHz bus speeds of AthlonXP's (not the 400MHz-based 3000+ and 3200+, in other words, but all the others). It can overclock.

This is $86 shipped at newegg, and I haven't heard anything bad about them so far.

I just ordered a new Abit NF7-S MB and god I hope it is just that and not the CPU. Since my old CPU wouldnt work either, Im hoping thats what it is is the MB and not the CPU. Was only on like 15-20 min before it shut down, praying for the best.
