CPU overheats when i run Microsoft Word

hi, when i run microsoft word my cpu usage goes up to a 100% and it's temp goes from a regular 45-47 to 62 which is when i turn the program off and wait for the cpu to cool down. I was wondering if it could be because i dont have enough RAM (256MB DDR). I have an AMD Athlon XP 2600. any ideas guys?:frown:

More ram will mean accessing the hard drive less frequently, but I'm not sure that will have much of an effevt on the cpu temp.

You CPU should not get that hot - you either need better CPU or case cooling or both.
What CPU cooler do you use & what is your case setup as far as fans & direction they a blowing including the power supply?

Also, winword.exe should not make your machine run @ 100%. Is your windows patched up with all the latest and greatest updates. What about anti virus software or spyware problems?

I am using the stock out of the box fan for the CPU and my case has a fan on one side and the powersupply vents the heat to the back of the case.there is a wall behind the power supply but it is at a safe distance to prevent heating problems. if u think it is my fan on the cpu, what do u recommend?

cleared a bit of adware i had and no viruses found...still same problem and my cpu fan rpm is ranging from 3750 - 3792 - 3835

I had that processor and it just runs HOT!!!!!!! Just use it till it dies and buy a sempron for $80 or a A64 like me.

1) on this page, note the point of the third and fourth photos and check that.

2) the stock thermal patch on an AMD heatsink is good for only one use. If at any time you have taken off the heatsink since its first installation, did you replace the thermal patch with some thermal grease, preferably good-quality stuff?

thanx everyone for all the help and mechbgon...i never replaced the thermal patch when i took the heatsink off other than that the installation of the heatsink is fine....yes i was dumb and tried putting it in the opposite way the first time wondering why the sucker wouldn't clip on 😀 im thinking i'll upgrade my fan to maybe a thermaltake...i hear they are good and put some new thermal grease on it. do u recommend any fan brands and or models?

I think the question should be why does M$Office peg the CPU out at 100%? It is not a CPU intensive program, unless you can type at one heck of a rate. When I have office running, the task manager takes more CPU time than office.

62 C is probably not that bad for 100% utilization. But it should take an app video editing/rendering to demand 100% P4 2.8HT at 100% for an hour and it gets up to 59 C, which is within tollerances.

RAM isn't the cause, not enough RAM will beat your disk drive up, but will not demand much from the CPU.

it does the same thing when i play starcraft which has amazingly low graphics, demands 100% and takes the temp up high

M$ Word will use 100% of the CPU when a large document is open. It schedules a low priority background task to run spelling/grammar checking at regular intervals. If the document is large enough it will continually perform the spelling/grammar check and will peg the CPU. Try turning off automatic spell checking and see if the CPU use goes down.
