CPU overheating, new cpu or heatsink?

I have an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe mobo that tells me computer fails to load because of overheating. The heatsink fan combo is stock. How can I tell if it is the CPU or the heatsink, or even the mobo? I heard that ASUS is known for this type of problem of telling one thing, and it being something different.

I would start with making sure that the HSF is mounted properly and that it is plugged in. Do you know if the fan spins up when you turn the system on?

All fans turn on. Computer does not get to BIOS screen, and the lights on my CD and DVD drives stay on.

Reseat the cpu cooler I'd say just for starters.

If you've heard crap like that you haven't had Asus much, as every motherboard I own is, and several I've built for others.

You're basically doing something wrong from the start I'd say.

Hope you haven't fried something all ready.

That is a mobo from 2003 likely running a P4. Yes, you will have issues, no its not worth it fixing them. If you need a basic box get a $50 Celeron and a $50 H81 board with a $25 stick of RAM.

Since its a P4, it's likely just trying to tell you that it wants to be retired...

Seriously though, if you've already reseated the cooler and have the same issues, its likely the board (or rather the capacitors) giving up the ghost. 11 years is a long time for a mainboard. Another possibility is your PSU is going bad, 11 years is even longer for it...

If you can afford it, its better to move on rather then trying to find a new P4 mainboard. For a basic cheap replacement, I'd suggest an AM1 Athlon or LGA-1150 Celeron. Even that will be a -major- upgrade from a P4.

This sounds outrageous but did you put Thermal Interface Material on the CPU?

If all fans turn on and the dvd drive gets power then I would reseat the power connectors to the motherboard. If that doesn't work check for bulging capacitors. More than likely your motherboard is shot.

I did put thermal paste on the processor.

I don't know what the issue is but I noticed that a pea-sized amount of tim gets better results than a tiny amount.

An old P4, bet the thermal paste dried up and has no effect anymore.

Make sure you clean the old paste really well with rubbing alcohol before you put new stuff.
