Cpu options

I've got an Asus A8N-SLI (old I know!), it's a socket 939 board (details here A8N-SLI). My comp's getting a bit slow so I thought I might just upgrade the cpu on the cheap, as oppsoed to going the whole way and getting a new board and all that crap. Now I've been out of the loop for ages so I have no idea about amd's current lineup, so what could I put on the board?

What proc you have in there now?

Your fastest option would be a fx -60. You could grab slower x2 939 and overclock it.

The problem is that the street price of that is $300-400. For that amount, buy a
Conroe Mobo - 150
E4400 - 155
Ram - 130 AMIR

Just my opinion. OR! Just get a dual core X2 3800+ for $96 shipped.

Yes it is exspensive for a fx-60. I'd go for a x2 4200 and overclock it to 2.6.

It's surprising the FX-60 still goes for 400.00 when you can now get the 6000+ X2 3GHz CPU for 230.00. Yeah, I know socket AM2. Lately the DDR2 ram is cheaper than DDR, so would not cost much to go with the 6000+ over the FX-60 even with a new board and ram

I use a Opteron 165 , socket 939, overclocked to FX-60 speeds of 2.6Ghz. Most are getting good overclocks from the 99.00 3800+ X2 from Newegg too.

For new builds, Intel is probably the best way. It's more for the money for overclockers, especially when the price drop hits in a week or so.

The X2 3800+ is the dual-core equivalent of your single-core 3200+. Grab any skt939 X2 if you can find one cheap, or if you want to overclock: look for a skt939 Opteron, which are great for 2.8-3.0Ghz and beyond (model no. 144-150 = single-core, 165-185 = dual-core).

i got a free a8n-sli deluxe from a friend when i needed a PCI express mobo for my 8800gts640. works for what i need it. Otherwise I would of gone with a conroe setup like everyone else.
