CPU not running at proper speed

I posted this in the "mobo" section as well, but this section seems to see far more action.

I purchased a new mobo last night (IWILL K7S3) to house my new XP2600 (333 FSB). For some reason I can?t set the CPU any higher than the default setting of 100, which runs my CPU at 1.37 Ghz (I believe) and my PC 2100 at 200Mhz. If I try to run the CPU any faster the computer will shut down. I can?t even run it at 133 (XP 2000 speed) without the computer cutting off.

I called the mobo manufacturer and he suggested that it?s either my PS (a crappy 350W PS, but one that has run my XP2000 system faithfully for a year) or my PC 2100 that is to blame. So, what do your guys think? Is the PS the more likely culprit, or the ram... or both? Also, I assume that I NEED PC2700 to run my CPU at it?s proper bus speed as PC2100 only runs at 266 Mhz... am I correct in this
assumption?

I appreciate any help/advice anyone can give.

Thank you.

could be any of the following, CPU, mobo, ram, power supply.. the easiest way to figure it out is going to be start swapping stuff out. start with the processor.

Don't think it's the CPU because (from my experience) either a CPU works or it doesn't. In all the times I have built and re-built my systems over the years I've never seen a CPU that only runs at lower speeds than it's supposed to unless it's over-heating. Also, don't think it's a heat issue because the CPU stays around 45-47C.

You are correct PC2100 runs @ 266, which means the processor should run @ 133fsb.
PC2700 runs @ 333 with processor @ 166fsb.

Kinda hard to make a call between PSU and memory.

From looking through the manual it states "The default setting is correct for any DDR memory you can install on this board. The alternate settings in the CMOS setup utility are used for overclocking".

The manual also states that "If you install a CPU that supports 266 fsb speed you must
config in the bios". I don't see in the manual what Ratios it gives you if any for memory.

Have you tried setting FSB to 133 and leaving memory setting to auto??

Yes, I have tried running the CPU at 133 and leaving the memory at the default setting. The BIOS reports the CPU as an XP200 and then the computer craps out before loading windows. So, in theory the 133 setting should work with the RAM as the ram can do 266, but for some odd reason it doesn't. I was running the same RAM in an old XP 2000 system and 266 with no problem.

I am going to pick up a stick of PC2700 on the way home later and see if that makes a difference... I know some mobos are finicky when it comes to generic ram. If that doesn't work I know I have a 400W PS somewhere around my house.

I'll post my findings later this evening. Let's just hope I'm not posting with a XP2600 CPU clocked at 1.4 Ghz. LOL

Well, here?s the update.

I swapped out the stick of PC2100 for a stick of PC2700 and all was well... for about five minutes then the computer turned itself off again. This leads me to believe that it?s either a heat issue or a PS issue.

I?m going to swap out my generic 350W for an Antec PS and I?ll put on a new CPU fan tonight and see what happens.

I hate when routine $hit like this turns into hours of troubleshooting. Sometimes I wish I was like every other snook in the world and just bought Dell's and Gateway's. 😛
