Hello all,

My local fry's get a good combo deal: 2.6 ghz intel @533 + ecs 648fx for only $189. Should I get this combo or wait for 10/26
and get intel 2.6@ 800
OR
get the 2500+ AMD with abit mobo ?

Need your help ASAP

Thank

i would just buy from newegg and get exactely what you want
usually fry's charges like 20 bucks more on motherboards and like 10 to 15 bucks more for cpu's

but that price don't look too bad, although i don't like the motherboard much

If I was going to buy an Intel processor I'd definately get one with an 800 Mhz FSB... the FSB and dual channel RAM really unleash the P4.

yeah i agree with jeff a chip like the 2.4ghz 800mhz fsb chip is a nice one for overclocking if that is what you intend to do with this system

if you wanna spend a little over 200 just get the 2.4 and a dual channel motherboard from newegg

If you look at the numbers and do the math... the 533 Mhz P4's were severely memory bandwidth limited.

FSB = 133x4 (quad pumped)
PC3200 RAM = 200x2 (double data rate)

RAM has a maximum of 3.2 GB/s bandwidth... the 533 Mhz bus has a maximum of about 4.3 GB/s bandwidth. So the memory isn't able to keep up with the FSB... that's the bottleneck, and that's why overclocking the RAM in a 533 Mhz P4 rig improved performance so much. Then just imagine how those systems that shipped with PC2700 RAM are being limited.

Now you look at the 800 mhz FSB...

FSB = 200x4
PC3200 RAM = 200x2

And now you have dual memory channels, twice the bandwidth... so now you have 6.4 GB/s maximum memory bandwidth... and the 800 mhz FSB also has a maximum of 6.4GB/s bandwidth. No more bottleneck.

Believe it or not,

Back in old time I overclocked everysingle system that I had (Most P3 systems). At that time I get a cheapo case with cheapo heatsink.
Now I get a cooler master case with 4 fans and a $40 heatsink and I'm lazy to overclock hehehe

So most of you guy is vote to wait to 10/26 and get the p4@800

I would definitely recommend a P4 C and an Intel 865 mobo.

I have built several using the Albatron 865 PE Pro mobo and various speeds on the P4, and I've been very pleased with the results. You can get a 2.6 Ghz P4 C from ZipZoomFly.com for $209, and the Albatron mobo for $95.

I run ultra-quiet with a Nexus Real Silent 300W power supply (under 20db), and a Zalman CNPS7000 cpu fan ($69 and $29 at EndPCNoise.com, respectively).

I'm running 2 striped Seagate 60 Gb SATA drives, a Radeon 9000 Pro, and 1.5 Gb of Kingston HyperX.

Just my two cents...

Sorry for the double post!

got my p4 2.4c 800/ht through newegg for like 170 bucks, my asus mobo for around 130. ram is where i took the hit, 200 bucks ouch, im used to pc-133 for 30 bucks hehe first upgrade in years
