CPU, Mobo,RAM upgrade for AMDAthlonxp + 1GBDDR RAM + 2004's mobo

I have the following system and want to upgrade to a system for following purpose:

Purpose of upgrade:
Gonna be used by my parents--web surfing, MS office, watching 720, 1080i movies, some basic gaming, Hassle free operation, Fast boot time, durable (work for long hours- will be switched on for 5-9 hrs per day).

OLD system (purchased in 2004):

CPU: AMD AthlonXP 2400+
Mobo: MSI K7N2 Delta - L
RAM : 758MB DDR1 RAM ( 256MB 333Mhz + 512 MB 400MHz).
GPU: 256MB AGP Graphics Card which plays 720p videos

This is giving some intermittent boot problem, RAM problem & problems which stall usage. As of now , I am bored to troubleshoot the problem in this and decided to go for an upgrade.

1. Is it wise to change the entire CPU, Mobo, RAM or just change the mobo alone or RAM?
2. Budget is $170 - $200 (Indian Rupees - 7000 - 10000) -
3. AMD based or Intel?

4. How much can I get from selling the old CPU, mobo, RAM?

I request you inputs.

Get new PSU as well, and hdd. If you have hdd/psu from 04, it's time to go.

1- Yes, you will have to change all 3, nothing takes ddr1 now.
2- That's a tight budget, but ill try to work with it as much as possible.
3- Hmm.
4- Very little 🙁 Maybe $40ish, the video card is probably the most sellable.

cpu $35

mobo $55

memory $30 (one stick of 2gb, allows for 4gb dual-channel later as mobo only has 2 slots)

hdd $45 (unless you already have decent sata hdd)

psu $30 (cheapest psu on ne that isn't just terrible)

That's 192.95, I think it was all free shipping as well.

The Sempron will be miles faster than the AXP, and allow for easy pop-in upgrades all the way to hex-core if you wish. The onboard HD4250 video is also far faster than any 256mb AGP card, and will handle 1080p with ease. HDMI, DVI, and VGA outputs give you a lot of flexibility, and even the native capability to run dual monitors. 2GB of ram is passable to start with. The WD Blue 320gb is a decent drive that is quiet and fairly quick. The 460w PSU will be a good basis for a stable reliable system and even accomodate a larger video card (eg; Radeon 6850) should you decide to go that route down the line. Overall I think this build will serve them very well.

Read the post before defaulting to newegg. Got an India e-tailer you can link us?

Ah crap, just noticed the Rupees reference.

My apologies, I'm unfamiliar with retailers in India, but hopefully a similar buildout can be made without breaking the bank.

On a positive note, I would imagine that the used hardware would be more sellable there. In fact the best route may be to try and get a cheap new case and optical drive, and to just reload the original PC to sell as a ready-to-go unit.

pretty much start from scratch at that point. even the fastest cpu that thing could take would get its pants beat off it by a modern budget processor. and those old xp chips couldn't run 1080p, 720p was beyond them as well i believe. therea re just too many obsolete stanards preventing easy upgrade at that point.

selling those old components? esp if they aren't in perfect condition, almost impossible. netbooks/net tops are cheap..and faster. so the value is almost nothing since anyone buying those old things can't justify spending much to cobble together a system that slow.

maybe the market is different in india, but here, the parts are keychain worthless. i have some of those things lying around, its just not worth selling.

no lifer doesn't have the time to edit posts and has to go and quadruple post?

again, we are talking about India so you should be looking up ebay India if anything.

This being Anandtech, we should cater to everyone.

A good bet would be a Sempron 140 or 145 with a 780g/785g/790 mb that has SB710 or SB750 to unlock the Sempron into a dual core. Only way I can see you pulling off the $200 budget. And even if it fails to unlock, the onboard gpu is still good enough for HD and streaming.

You're not going to be able to get make a worthwhile upgrade to that system without essentially replacing the whole thing. I'd suggest that you search auction sites/markets for off-lease corporate systems and just buy them something "new".

it isn't about catering, it is about the chance he will get help in his market. the vast majority of users on anandtech are american.
