CPU/Mobo - Home Video Encoding

My desktop went up in smoke last night and swapping out the power supply did not solve the problem, so why not upgrade.

I need a mobo/cpu to do the following for ~$300...
video encoding
video editing
web browsing/chatting
NO GAMING

I'd like to be able to use my current components
1GB ofPC 3200
Ghetto matrox gfx card
sound card

I don't require on board audio, nic, video, PCIe, sata....

One possibility could be:
P4 3.0E $181
Newegg

Asus P4P800SE $93.50
newegg

Thanks 🙂

EDIT: looks like I smoked a capacitor on my mobo, might not have to upgrade afterall 🙂.

I have to say save your money a bit and get:

PentiumD 820

and

THen a board like this Linky.. That way you can use your current RAM and Video card (I assume it is AGP), then as you upgrade them you can switch to DDR2 and PCIe.

I think it would be alot faster for what you are using it for......Just a thought

Total $306.40

I've heard (complete noob here) that the Pentium D's require some very aggressive cooling measures?

if I'd be good to go with my current case fans (2 rear, 1 side, 1 front, not 100% on sizing) and the stock heatsink/fan I'd be interested.

Any word on if the X2 greatly outperforms the Pentium D at encoding? (I use autogk for most of my encoding)

Nah, the stock cooler should be alright. Just don't overclock at ALL.

And naturally the X2's perform better than the Pentium D's at just about anything. They're also that much more expensive. A decent X2/mobo combo will set you back $450-$500.

Thanks a ton!

I'm off to microcenter now to replace the mobo (stupid caps)

I'll have to consult my pocket book to see about upgrading to a dualcore...
