I want to build a computer for fun. I already have spare hard drives, power supply, video card..

Any suggestions?

I read from Zebo about the P4 2.26Ghz OC to a 3.7 - 3.8 on stock voltage. Maybe??

Sempron 2800+??

Thanks!!

$200!!! pffft why waste?

Try $120, the 2.26b is exciting IMO because it's the only real low priced chip Intel sells that can be made into a powerhouse.

tis true 3.6-3.7 defaults 3.9ish if you got skill, luck, and volts... look here

Another option is another A64, but you been there already sometimes it's nice to try differnet stuff.:)

I'll tell ya, if your just doing it for fun and a little challange, look into the socket 478 mobile P4/Celerons (Northwoods) and the socket 370 Tualatin Celerons.

In the end the mobile P4/Celerons be no giant killer, but there is satisfaction in taking extremely cheap dog-a$$ stuff and get it on board to within 20% of the high end. Search this forum for Karaktu's thread on this. The Tualerons are just amazing performing low cost, low wattage parts that can take throw away parts (old psus, sdram, cheapo hsf, old 370 boards, etc) and get them to perform on par in the P4 2.0 range.

If your not old enough to be of the jumper era and have win98 around, I'd grab a super socket 7 board like a VA-503+ and a mix of K2, KIII, and Pentium cpus. Fooling with them will give you great appreciation for the current easy-overclock BIOS smacked into current board technology.

Edit: hello Zeeb

As long as it is for games it is nice...cause without HT (the p4's crutch to bad architecture) you will be no faster then a 400-500mhz slower northwood cpu in HT optimised apps like encoding, rendering, etc...

My 3.5ghz northwood would beat the 3.9ghz intel chip in the HT apps I ran...I got 19-22% with it enabled over disabled and o 3.9ghz just wouldn't have cut it for me...

Again games it it good...otherwise get a M0 stepping 2.4ghz and take it to 3.6ghz and you will be better off all around...

Thanks for the suggestions!!

Here's what I come up with:

Prescott 3.2E
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116176
Frys is selling this one for $179.99 with a Mobo.. Probably ECS :(
Maybe sell Mobo and get an Abit one

Northwood 2.26
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116141
Plus Abit AI7
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127164
Total abot $225

Sempron 2600+ for $69.99 including Mobo probably ECS @ Fry's if its still available.

or

Another Amd 64
Vince??
SD 3700+ no new Mobo.. use Asus A8V
sell my 3500+ Newcastle

Whats a good case for for cooling? No more than $250.

Thanks!!

Well, why would you wanna spend money in the first place, if it's just to overclock? Go to a garage sale, and buy the biggest piece of junk you can find.

I rather buy new :)
Don't like used. Plus, if I buy "junk" and it don't work then its just like throwing away money.

Dude, what would a computer at a garage sale cost? $5? $20? And if it doesn't work, make it work. Work your magic, Mr. Valentine :p.
