CPU/memory

PLEASE help out a new system builder. With all the tech talk about building systems it is sometimes hard to absorb, retain, and decipher the true core of the matter. (speaking for myself only)

My question is this........

I'm getting a nf7-s v2 mobo and want to upgrade my memory. My CPU is XP 2400+ T-bred 266mhz fsb. The mobo says it supports memory up to 400mhz. Since my CPU only supports 266mhz fsb does that mean I can't use memory at 400mhz? And can someone explain the correlation between CPU fsb and memory speed? Are they one in the same? etc. etc.

Thanks for the lesson

WELL, being in the same situation myself a few months back when I built my comp, I can help you. If you have an Intel P4 system, you can run different speeds for the RAM and the FSB. But AMD Athlon XP systems don't like that. Yes, you can buy pc3200 RAM and run it with a T-Bred, but the RAM will lower itself to 266 MHz speeds to match the processor. I'm running pc3200 with my Barton 333 MHz fsb processor, and the RAM just slows itself down. Go ahead, get the pc3200, it will be worth it in the long run because if you ever decide to get an Athlon 64, you can use that RAM with it. (And if you overclock the processor, you can match the fsb TO the RAM, and you can utilize it to the fullest speed.) Hope I helped 🙂
