CPU / MB recommendation?

I currently have a Athlon XP2400+ w/ ASUS A7X266-E MB, ATI 8500 VC & 512mb Ram. Looking to upgrade the CPU and MB. I was thinking about the AMD 3800 X2 Dual Core, 1gb Ram & MB?. Would I see a significant increase in speed? I run AUTOCAD and video editing applications. The MB needs to be capable of handling (3) hardrives. One for the operating system and applications and the othe two for backup files, storage, ect. What are some recommendations for the CPU, MB, RAM and Video Card under $800.00?

Thanks

Yes, you'd see a huge increase in speed. I don't know about a motherboard though. I've had good luck with my Asus A8V, but that's an AGP motherboard and you may want to go PCI-e.

Do you play games and what types? It'll help if others know so they can figure that into your budget.

No games. No over clocking. Just CAD programs and a lot of video and photogragh editing.

Get the X2 3800, and the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra. That should bring your subtotal up to $460 ($350 proc, $110 mobo). Depends on where you look. Get 2GB RAM...most workstation apps see a big boost. Corsair VS is around $100/GB so that's $660 total now. Throw in a Geforce 6600 and you should be around $780. 🙂

That will be an insane upgrade compared to what you have now. You should go with 2GB of Corsair Value Select instead of 1GB of whatever due to the programs that you use.

I would recommend that you use 4 hard drives in a RAID 5 array for your system.

Epox 9NPA+ Ultra mobo @ ~120$
A64 X2 3800+ @ ~350$
2X 1GB PQI Power PC3200@ ~200$
Leadtek 6600 @ ~120$

Total of the four parts = 790$
You could always bump up the video card.

Ya its getting really annoying with the performance drop that 2T gives (5-7% is alot btw), you cant do 4x 512....

I second (er, third) the recommendation for an X2, 2GB of RAM, and a NF4-based motherboard. My system is an X2 4400+, ASUS A8N-E, 2GB (2x1GB PC3200), and Gigabyte 6600 PCI-E - and it flies in photo editing with multitasking. You won't be disappointed with an X2.

I am also going to build a new PC but stuck on the high end parts, mainly the CPU and drives

First, I do game but I also do video work which really maxes out my 2800 +

I want it to really be fast but don't want to buy the fastest CPU out there

So, duel core or what CPU is advised. A 4000 can be gotten ata decent price but I also think I want to get one faster

Your system Provia sounds nice

X2 4400+, ASUS A8N-E, 2GB (2x1GB PC3200),

Now That is the MB and the RAM I plan to get but I am getting the geforce 7800 VC
I have a 6800 now and this will really be tons faster from what I saw on benchmarks
Plus the CPU kick alone will make the 2800 look really sucky. My 64 bit 3200 laptop showed me that it just handles CPU load better than the 32 bit 2800.

Basically I want a Alienware killer type lf PC that also is a good work and graphic/dig editing machine

Fast hard drive transfer is what I really want to improve on. I am tempted to try raid 0 with SATI as I always had EIDE. I just worry of losing ALL data on a failure.

Thanks for any suggestions. I will pay more for the CPU if it's worth it

Who's a good outlet to purchase the below configuration from?

Thanks

Epox 9NPA+ Ultra mobo @ ~120$
A64 X2 3800+ @ ~350$
2X 1GB PQI Power PC3200@ ~200$
Leadtek 6600 @ ~120$

Total of the four parts = 790$
You could always bump up the video card

Hmm, are the X2 3800s out yet? Im tempted to go that route instead of a 4200. I really only play games with some video encoding but a X2 is rather tempting.
