CPU making a grinding sound

Ok, Im making this post for my friend. He recently placed a processor into his computer to test it and it worked fine. He then placed his old processor back into his old computer and states hes hearing a grind come from the CPU area. I said its probably the fan but he said he didn't think it was coming from the fan. In short, the computer isn't posting. So what could this grinding sound come from? I asked him whether he was sure he placed the CPU in right and he says hes sure.

I know very little as to what type of board this is but I do know it is a AMD 2100.

First of all, the CPU isn't a moving part, so it can't grind (or not that I know of). Perhaps it is virbrations from his HSF. In that case, if the fan failed, the reason why his computer didn't post is probably because he overheated his processor. See if the fan's running.
