I am trying to build a new pc using an Intel 2.8 GHZ Pentium D 820 cpu, and Abit Al8 motherboard. When I start it the boot screen shows a celeron D logo. Does this mean it is a celeron d processor. Also is is possible to run the motherboard without the cpu.

No and no. You may need a bios flash for the board to recognize the dual core. Check what bios version you have when you post, then go to abit's website and see if dual core support is listed for your bios version.

Might just need a bios update, looks like it requires bios version 14 for pentium-D support. Did you get the CPU from a reliable source?

And like o 1die said above, you aren't gonna run the motherboard with out a cpu.

Well then you could have gotten ripped off..if it's supposed to be a pentium-d and it's really a celeron D..
