Actually, 128MB is barely enough to run windows (yes it can be done), 256MB is a little better, and 512MB is relatively comfortable, with 1GB or more being the good life.
I don't know where people get the idea that 512MB of RAM isn't enough for XPUnless they like running a million background processes

Running XP Pro, with 33 processes, I'm using 400 MB of RAM, with two web pages open. That means that 512MB would be the minimum I could get by with, without wearing out my hard drive, just running one app at a time.
