What will the lever do?...I know it locks it down in place...but with what? Is their some kind of a hook that locks it in? From what angle?

I cracked (very small) the side of an a64 a while back when it was pulled out with the lever down. (hsf goo).

No bent pins came from this - the system seems to run ok. But i'm idling at 42c on idle and 52 load with a huge hsf from swiftech and a tornado 80mm fan.

Might this cause restarts or shutdowns at all?
 
doesn't the socket top plastic piece slide to squeeze the pins between the ower plastic piece.
the lower piece sees to have elongated holes too??
 
it's called a ZIFF socket Zero Input Friction. it's designed so you don't break those precious pins by squeezing them rahter than downward pressure. although some people still break them. whatever you do don't oc it or kiss it good-bye

Actually it is Zero Insertion Force socket.

If you have been buidling computers for a while you will bitterly remember that to get a 486 in and out of a Non-ZIF socket you litterally had to pry it out one side at a time. It was a royal pain... ah the good ol days 🙂
