previous motherboard was a gigabyte 8ipe1000-g. the cpu idled at about 40C. i replaced the motherboard to an intel d875pbz. before i installed the cpu, i cleaned everything off the heatsink and the cpu with nail removal liquid. now it idles at around 46-48C. could the sensor be off in one of those boards?

cpu: 2.8e prescott not overclocked
zalman 92mm copper (same cpu fan speed)

edit: using AS5

Motherboards will usually read temperatures differently. BIOS Revisions make a difference to temperature readings also.

Update your motherboards BIOS and report back. Also, your new applications of AS5 needs time to settle so that may drop you a C or 2.

why update the bios unless you have a real good reason?

Just for the sake of a temperature reading?
I would get some 3rd party program like Everst@home etc......

the probes could be moved slightly from board to board. Its usually not a great idea to depend on the Probe's readings. They give you a ±10 C accuracy. The good thing about probes is that their Delta T is very dependable. If you notice a change of 20C from idle to load, you might be concerned.

In that case, why would you update your antivirus definitions?

Update = Newer stuff, fixes older problems

Not even the same thing!!
Bogus analogy!!

Most mobo manufacturers ask that you don`t update your bios unless the bios update corrects issues that you are having with your mobo!
Not all mobo`s have the same exact issues!!

Nice try though,...
