CPU Intense Game and the PC Freezes

This only happens at times when the PC seems to be on a heavy load. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

I'm playing Flight Sim 2004 (CPU intensive) and listening to some music with WMP. I've got a DFI SLI-DR Expert board packing an Opteron 148 @ 2.97GHz under a SI-120 and 120mm fan. Corsair 2x 512MB XL TCCD memory at 212MHz and 2-2-2-5. HD is a Seagate 250GB SATA. Video card is an eVGA 7800GT.

The temperatures look fine at 38C idle on the CPU, but the Chipset's at about 1.67v and 46C (which is what I think may be causing the problem). Video card as well is idling at 46C but the threshold is 115C so it should be fine.

Anyways, the system freezes up totally at random and the sound gets slurred (Audigy 2 card). A restart quickly fixes the problem.

Any ideas?

PSU's a Hiper 580W Modular

I'll probably lower the OC. The summer heat is going to be here soon too. It's very humid today as well.

I doubt the PSU is the problem. Here are my voltages and whatnot.

CPU: 1.58v
LDT Bus: 1.29v
5v: 5.08v
DRAM: 2.8v
12v: 12.22v
NB 1.5+: 1.55v
3.3v: 3.4v

CPU's Idling at 40C
PWM IC is at 43C
Chipset is at 47C - I think this may be the problem...

What is the recommended chipset voltage for the DFI Expert running the Opteron 148 at 2.95GHz?

*IF* your HYPER uses the round modular connections and *IF* the problem presists.

Remove the connectors and look for high resistance burns. The 4pin ATX uses 2 pins
at the modular connect and the 6pin plug uses 3 skinny pins at the connect. This is a
weak link in the design. Just a thought w/o FUD.

Thanks Gal.

I've pulled the system down to 266FSB and 2.93Ghz but haven't load tested it yet. I also took the chipset voltage down to 1.55v which allows it to idle at 46C now, 1C down. The CPU voltage was taken down to 1.55v and the PWM IC dropped to about 40-41C and the CPU dropped to 38C. I'll have to take a can-o-air to it tomorrow to dust off the SI-120. The cables are pretty organized too and I've removed the 2nd HD tray as well and managed to stick a fan in there (Chieftec/Antec case) as well.

Heck maybe I just need some air conditioning hehehe
