I dropped the cpu into place but i noticed it slid back and forth a tiny bit. It seems like it wouldn't move at all if the pins were in place, is this correct?

Athlon 64 or Core2? Pentium 4 (s478) or Athlon XP? Mobile or desktop? Inquiring minds want to know.
I'll assume you have a C2D. The CPU has no pins, and it will wiggle ever so slightly in the socket.
Oh and in order for pins to fit in a hole, the hole has to be bigger then the pin, so there will be some degree of play.
 
Yes, that's just what i was asking, thank you. It's a C2D and I was nervous about pressing the little lever down because it seems it was forcing the cpu down too much.
