CPU Installation Question

A friend recently bought a P3 667MHz system for a backup system for his little brother. He proceded to buy a new P3 933 proc off eBay and asked me if I'd install it for him. All seemed to go fine during the install, but the system will not boot with the 933 installed. We've since replaced the CPU with the original 667 and all seems fine. We tried unplugging hard drive (figuring maybe power supply was overburdened) and re-sitted the vid card but nothing seemed to help.

Does it make sense to conclude that the 933 is a dud, or could there be something else I'm overlooking in changing the CPU's? It doesn't seem that there is a CPU multiplier jumper on the Epox mobo, and the FSB one should stay at 133. Any ideas?

Do you know the motherboard supports 933? Maybe it needs a BIOS upgrade.

I think that the 667 runs at 5x133 and the 933 runs 7x133

Biostud's right with the bus speeds/multiplier figures. You could be right too in thinking of a BIOS update. We had done some research and his mobo definitely supports the 933 (it's the highest freq supported), but perhaps a BIOS flash might be required.

Any other ideas?

It either a dud cpu or you need to update your BIOS. Not too much else here that could be wrong.

BTW, the motherboard in question is the Epox EP-3VCA2 as seen here. Since their BIOS update link seems to be down right now, does anyone know if it would be wise to use this BIOS update from Epox's European page on this motherboard when I'm in Canada?

Shouldn't be a problem.

1. BIOS update - doenst work, go to step 2

2. if there are dip switches to set multiplier, change it to reflect 133*7 = 933. intel multipliers are locked, and setting the wrong multiplier on the board/BIOS will cause it not to boot. doesnt work, go to step 3

3. test chip in known working computer (ie computer shop) - doesnt work, go to step 4

4. refund and get your money back - doesnt work, go to step 5

5. sugar seller's gas tank and burn his house down. - there is no step 6

hope this works for you :)
