CPU installation question.

I'm a newbie system builder and have a question on installing the CPU.

My motherboard is MSI 875P Neo. I've a intel p4 2.4C CPU retail box that includes a heatsink and a fan. On the bottom of my heatsink I see a black square tape.
Is it a thermal tape? Should this be peeled off and then have the heatsink mounted on the CPU?

I have read about thermal paste. Is that a better solution if I intend swap in a faster CPU in future. Note that I don't intend to overclock.

Please help.

Thanks.

the thermal tape that comes with the HS/F should be enough for ur CPU, since you aren't overclocking and since P4s are cooler running that it really doesn't need thermal paste.

and yes, you will need to peel off the protective covering on the thermal tape. you should see a pink material.

Don't peel off the tape. I just bought this last Friday and there is no protective cover for the thermal x-fer tape.

last time idealt with my friends p4 heatsink i saw a black tape like substance that came off relatively easily....
i dunno what it was, but since we didnt use the retail heatsink, i didnt care much heh
