cpu in wrong way=burned cpu?

My friend called me up saying he was building a new computer and he wanted my help. I told him I'll stop by in an hour and said read the manual because it's pretty much straight forward. His specs

asus p4p800 dlx
p4 3ghz
1gb ram
9800 pro with arctic cooling rev 3

I get there and the cdrom isn't spinning nor the hard drive, but the cpu fan is. First I think its his psu because it was only 300w and I thought it was under powered. We go get a new psu install it and still nothing. I take everything apart and i check the cpu and noticed that it was in the wrong way. The gold pin was on the lower right hand corner instead of the upper right, but he said he didnt smell or hear any popping and the cpu looked fine.

we go out to get a new mobo to see if that works and it does not. tired new vid card and monitor and still nothing which leaves me to believe that its a burned cpu. I can't think of anything else...any ideas?

Thanks

You can;t put the cpu in the wrong way unless you bend a pin or two (or more) out of the way. Any pins bent over or broken ?

none of the pins are broken or bent...thats what I thought as well until I tried it and it slipped in without force...i was dumbfounded by that

There is only 1 way to go in and if it wasn't line up in the socket it would not have fallen down into the socket..therefore when the HSF was latched on it would have forced the cpu down and bent the pin completely over....3 out of the 4 corners have a pin in that corner..so it should have never fit before...

Pins have got to be bent. If by a stroke of luck they are not, there is no way the hsf is being installed correctly.

You can't put it in the wrong way. It wont go! If you use brute force, you will damage the pins badly. It was in the right way. The problem is elsewhere.
