I am looking to upgrade the crappy T5550 CPU in my Gateway P-6860 notebook. I've read of others stating they've upgraded theirs, but it's always been 3rd-hand accounts of "I new a guy who put a Core 2 Extreme in" and not specific info.

What I'm trying to figure out is specifically if the BIOS will recognize T9xxx, P8xxx, and/or P9xxx chips. The P-series especially since they use less power, but of course since they're also newer, who knows how touchy Gateway's BIOS is?

Anyong have any experience installing these chip series' in this notebook series?

Hey dude, As long as you use a CPU that has an 800Mhz FSB you'll be fine. The new new CPUs have a 1066 FSB which won't work with our laptops. BTW, I got a Core 2 Extreme X7800 off FS\FT forums some months back and installed in mine. Works great, even OC's to 3Ghz
