"cpu id error": PIII600 on AsusP2B 440bx chipset

I had my board go out on me so I bought this cheap replacement that supports PII's only after doing flasing the bios.

Now here's the problem, this "cpu id error" comes up while loading the devices before the OS starts (Im running XP pro). And then Windows goes to the boot options screen where it keeps locking up. I have to reboot and retry several times and keep choosing last known good config. Eventually will XP boots. I've figured out that the cpu id error comes up because this board wasn't initially built to support the PIII ( apparently this error comes up on routers that don't support certain modules before a firmware update ).

Is there any way to fix this? Once the PC boots, it functions normally. When I restart it's got an 80% chance of not booting. Hopefully someone can help me out with this cuz its gettin pretty frustrating holding the power switch down 10 times in a row sometimes. :D

PS: Also in the bios, I can't figure what the voltage monitor is showing me. It has voltage increments like this...
Voltage Monitor:
12V: +12.1v
5V: +5.0V
1V: +1V
1V: -1V
5V: -5.2V
12V: -12.1V

Many the Cpu id error is just an error with no effect and I have a voltage problem with the board?

Your version of that board may only support Katmai 512 cache cpu's. I'm guessing that yours is a "E" cpu that has only 256 cache. Does your bios have a cpu setting in it? It may be at a default setting and you would need to go in and choose 6 X 100.

What board were you running before? Was it a 440bx chipset? Switching motherboards is miserable with win2k\xp. I've had some success changing boards that were the same chipset, but usually it ends up being a reload over the top of the existing install.

Those P2B's are really pretty damn good and reliable boards.. Has the BIOS been flashed to the latest available from ASUS? That may help the CPU id error. Also, like redbeard1 said, did you just change out the board and not do any sort od WinXP re-install? They don't like that very much.

I haven't done a reinstall of XP so then this would be causing the lockup... ok thanks a bunch guys.

As for the cpu id error, the board I was running previously was an Asus P2b-L which had onboard LAN and now I don't. This processor worked with no issues on that board. I have the newest Bios, although its not that new unfortunately, which posts at sometime in 5/2000. Redbeard, I do have the 256 cache "E" cpu and there is no way to change the cpu type in the bios, I had to set the jumpers up to support 6x100.

I'm thinking that I will have to live with this error because of the board revision and old bios. Will post if reinstall works, thx again.

if you search for it you might find a beta version bios -- something that I needed to get a 80 gig hard drive to work with a P2B. I think it was on their FTP site, possibly non-us domain FTP site.

P2B beta BIOS from ASUS
Click on the beta button and you will get bios ver 1014. PIII Coppermine support was added with 1012.
