CPU how old is too old

What is your general rule of thumb on adding new rigs or getting parts? Think I can get my hands on a Phenom 9950 with an aftermarket thermaltake cooler. I got some spare DDR 2, HDD, PSU, case, radeon 1950xt to give me display. Would mainly add this to doing Pogs and universe@home. Seems like the old Phenom 9950s were Q6600 competitors.

I was surprised DDR2 is still up there. I guess we've reached an era where hardware from the late 2000s is still good for throwing together a general usage PC. Stick an SSD in a Q6600/8400 and I bet it feels faster than my work high end laptop workstation with a Core I7 and slow hdd. I'm watching quite a few auctions on Q6600/8400/Phenom 9950. Along with newer CPUs. Want to take advantage of the spare parts laying around. Looking like I'm going to have to hold off on building a 4790k and relegating my FX 8350 to secondary DC rig and home server. Got some auto repairs I need to blow cash on. Might hold off until end of 15 or 2016 on building new rig.

It's too old when the latest phone is faster.

In seriousness, I'm totally with you on piecing together systems. I guess my guide for the moment is to look up what I'm thinking of bidding on on https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php. And then I realize it gets outperformed by a Intel Celeron G1850. 🙁

How much will it cost in electricity to run per month? How many PPD will it get?

Would you be better off saving the money each month and getting the new rig that much earlier?

I was going to mention something along "Larry's Rule", but use the entire machine instead of just the processor. Maybe divided by something or another.

I think I need to find out the rates for OG&E in OKC. I haven't been able to tell that much of a difference in my electric costs month to month since doing DC. They are pushing this smart hours stuff on everyone so I'm not sure if the rates are fixed 24 hours or they pick and choose to charge more for energy use during business hours. I think it might be 5-6 cents per kWh. My wife stays home to watch our daughter and my DC rigs for me lol!

I ran a few pogs WUs on my Devil's Canyon 4790K so you could see what it could do. (I usually run at 4.45 but have it at 4.2 while crunching some PrimeGrid CPU WUs.)

i7 920 at 3.9 = ~2,085 ppd per core in pogs

i7 4790k at 4.2 = ~3,350 ppd per core in pogs

One thing to add though, don't discount the fact that if you're primarily a GPU cruncher, those old machines are a cheap way to add another card or 2, 3, 4. 😉
