cpu HELP!

I am changing the CPU on my wifes office computer. Its a 500 mhz PIII. Intel says the mobo is compatible with a 733 mhz PIII. Will there be any problems perfoming this changeout? What exactly does this entail?

Taking off the CPU heatsink, taking out the processor, sticking the new CPU in, and then put the fan back on top.

This may or may not be the case. It sounds like that P3 might be an old Katmai slot 1 cpu, in which case the process should be even easier.

Is the system memory PC100 or PC133? A P3 500 MHz CPU is 100 MHz bus speed while a P3 733 MHz CPU is 133 MHz bus.

If the system's memory is PC100 you'll need to find the proper motherboard jumper or BIOS settings to run the CPU and memory out of sync (4:3 ratio CPU:RAM) unless you also replace the RAM.

You could get a 700E instead (100 MHz bus) or with a motherboard BIOS update you might be able to use a 750 - 800 - 850 P3 or a Celeron 800 - 1000 (all at 100 MHz bus).

Stay away from any Celeron slower than 800 MHz, the 600 - 766 are all much slower than P3s.

Unless you can do this for no cash outlay--don't do it. The biggest concerns are the bus speed, 100 or 133mhz, and if the motherboard is designed to handed the extra current required by the new processor. R
