I've got the retail heatsink installed on my 2400+, A7N8X-D. I'll be packing up the computer and moving in about a week, and I am sure there are going to be a few bumps on the trip. There shouldn't be any serious jolts however. Is it safe to move my machine around with the HSF installed? I was going to check that the HSF was still seated properly after I unpacked it, but I don't want it to slip off and roll around inside my case during the trip. Thanks. Peace.

If you are that worried about it, just remove it and reinstall it when you get to the new place. On another note, I have never removed a heatsink when moving my computers around (shipping them, etc) and have never had a problem.

Cool, I'm not worried, just a bit cautious. I haven't really had to deal much with the socket CPU's in my time. I have had two Slot 1's that I used up until Christmas and they were always robust. Thanks again. Peace.

since your going to check for good contact anyway, i would take it off for the trip.......a HSF will really do some damage rolling around in a case......(i know)....

Definitely remove it. Its not extremely likely that it will break off, but if it does you'll be left with a broken plastic clip.
If you are lucky, when it breaks it will only take 1 plastic prong off, and you can put a new retention clip utilizing the 2 non-broken clips.
If unlucky you'll have to buy an expensive screw-mounted Heatsink.
The point is, take it off just to be safe.

From the 1 month I had working for a computer place (my only computer-related job so far:(), the retail AMD heatsinks only use the one clip, not all 3, which would be preferable. But with just one, that's just that much less support that the thing will have from torsional stresses. Of course, you could buy amcdonald's Alpha 8045, which bolts through the motherboard - I bet that it would sooner tear the CPU socket out of the motherboard completely, than snap off. Of course, with that much force being applied, the system would be quite dead anyway.;)

Since it's a retail CPU, I won't expect it to be very heavy like the full copper HSFs. Should go fine
