Cpu heatsink mounting braket snapped off, is there anyway to keep the heatsink on?

Good morning everyone,
We are working on a dual PPro machine and when we were clamping down one of the heat sinks on the cpu, the little tabby things broke off. (Tabby thing... that's the technical term right )

So, we tried superglueing it. ( ) Which obviously didn't work. But now we are kinda in a sticky situation.

The CPUs are quite large, and there is a big surface contact area. Is there any product that we can use to "glue" the heat sink to the cpu? I'd imagine there is some type of thermal grease that acts as a glue.

Any other ideas would be openly accepted.

Update: I got a link to a thermal adhesive. Will this work??

TIA :)

You answered your own question :D

BTW, it is a permanent solution.

What worries me is on the page it says;

"Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive IS NOT intended to be used between a CPU and the CPU heatsink.
On a CPU, only use Arctic Silver Thermal Compound."

And if I look at the thermal compound, it's not an adhesive.

What gives??

Thermal compound = Thermal grease

You could try a 50/50 mix of the AS epxoy and AS Compound. It should set-up with enough adhesion to hold the hs on without bonding permanently.

I'm only suggesting this as a work around for your situation since you're only other alternative is to replaced the zif socket and/or the motherboard.

Bolsen,

I'd be a bit concerned as well. Thermal adhesive will permanently fix the hs to the cpu core
and will also rely on the core to support the HS.

Have you looked at perhaps getting a new HS that uses all three retaining tabs as opposed
to just the single tab (which is broke in your case)?

I didn't know they made such a thing.

Do you perhaps have a url?

I have a Thermalright SK-7... they're down to $20 now... and it has the 3 hole clip. Great heatsink too... but overkill for a Pentium Pro.
One of those cheap ones that were linked to would probably be sufficient

Well, I called on one of the heat sinks, and they said no one was avail, so I decided to go with the thermal grease. $8, but it had to be a $10 minimum order, so I bought rubber washers too :):)

Thanks for the help, it's nice to know what your options are :D

I don't think glueing the heatsink to your cpu is a good idea, you should at least try to search more on those cheap 3 hole clip heatsinks instead. the idea of the weight of the heatsink pulling on your CPU while the only thing connecting your cpu to your motherbaord is just it's pins is pretty scary.

I'm not sure which heatsink you got, but I hope you confirmed the measurements. Last time I checked, Socket A/Socket 370 (Athlon/P3/Celeron) heatsinks don't fit on the Socket 8 (PPro).

i had to epoxy a heatsink onto an old celeron, and it's been running fine for 2 years. the ppro should be fine with a sink glued on.

Get a cheaper Taisol HS; they usually have 3 pronged clips or ditch the darn thing.
