cpu heatsink a bit large

I bought a new quieter heatsink/fan for my computer and it fits but is really snug with the ram. my board has 2 ram slots. currently I am only using one so I moved the ram stick to the slot further from the heatsink. If I have a ram stick in the first slot next to the heatsink the stick is basically flush with the heatsink. I'm wondering if this would be a problem when I eventually decide to add more ram. I don't think it will be but would like some opinions.

when you have ram in the first slot do the HSF and the ram touch or are they just very close together.

as long as they dont touch you should be fine.

how hot is that heatsink getting? (the bit where it's touching)
edit: and is it also touching anything bare carrying current?

the only thing it's touching is the ram. well, currently since I moved the 1 stick of ram to the other slot it doesn't touch so it's fine for now. In the future, if I decide to get another stick of ram the heatsink and ram would touch. I doubt the heatsink is very hot. I don't game on this pc and I put it in standby mode when I'm not on it so it stays pretty cool. In the future, if I decide to get another stick of ram then I may have to buy another cpu fan as well.

Big heatsink for a crammed little board hehe. Should be OK even if it IS touching. Moving the RAM to the other slot was a smart idea though. Just to be on the safe side 🙂

if the metal is just barely touching the ram chips and not putting any pressure on it then I dont think it should be a problem.

Put a piece of electrical tape between them where they touch.

what would be the purpose of that? It also seems like the warmth of the heatsink would heat the electrical tape causing the substance that makes it sticky to warm and loosen making the tape come off.

If they are snug together, that tape isn't going anywhere. The purpose of it would be, to make sure no electricity is passing through the them. You know, causing them to short out. BAD!!

You could always file it down to increase the clearance. Lots of people did that for the old ABit BP6 - very tight around the sockets on that board.

when the time comes to buy more ram I probably will just by a smaller heatsink.

I'm not going to worry about this at this point since I moved the 1 stick of ram over to the other slot but I'm wondering if there would be enough electricy going from ram to heatsink to cause a problem. what do you think?
