Case Fractal - Design R4
Power Supply - Seasonic 620watt bronze modular
Motherboard - Asrock Extreme4 1150
Processor - Needed
Memory - Patriot 16gb ddr3 4x4 kit
Gpu - Needed
Storage - 250gb Samsung Evo + Seagate 2tb green

It's mainly for gaming/media center stuff/ and the usuals internet stuff.
For the gpu my resolution is 1920x1200

Budget is 400-550 keeping it closer to the lower end if possible.

Will purchase from amazon and or newegg. I have 225 in gift cards to amazon, But I'm also aware of the masterpass promo at newegg. So I may split the purchase depending on where i save the most.

Thanks.

Follow rule of thumb video card cost = 2x cpu cost. so if you target $480 that gives you a $160 cpu and a $320 gpu.

This card is $350 after rebate and shipping:

But of course it doesnt leave you with enough to get an i5. You can either go with a haswell i3 or switch out your motherboard for something sandy bridge or FX compatible. FX6300 or a used 2500k are both a much better value than haswell in this budget range.

Also, ditch the 16GB or RAM that is way too overkill. If you really want a 4670K then go with 8GB and it should then fit your budget.

I already have everything but the GPU and the CPU from previous builds. So going with a platform outside of haswell is out.

Is a 770 really needed if I can play most games on a 760 or 270x? I don't need to be able to play every game at maxed out settings.

For $550, you'll want to get a 4670K to fulfill that 12-phase Z87 board's overclocking capabilities (if not now, then in the future when it becomes more meaningful). That does eat into your GPU budget, but at the same time, any GPU above $300 tends to be considerably worse performance per dollar.

There's the 280X at that $300 mark - but it's currently OOS everywhere. Then there's the GTX 770 which has gone up to $340 or so, it's not really good value anymore and just outside your budget.

i5-4670K $220 @ amazon
+
MSI R9 270X Gaming $200 @ newegg or
MSI GTX 760 Gaming $255 AR shipped @superbiiz

The 760 is just a tad faster on average and I guess also a bit more overclockable; the 270X is basically an overclocked 7870.

the 4670K seems like a good bet. So lets go with that. By tad faster with 270x vs 760 what are we talking about on average between the two.

I know that is the conventional wisdom, but with the slow progress of cpu performance increases from Intel and with AMD emphasizing 4 core apus, I am tending to think that putting more budget to the cpu may in fact be a good idea, and if one does this may not have to upgrade the cpu for a *very* long time.

So I went with a 4670k since that was about what I had in amazon gift cards. So now I just need a gpu

About 10% faster plus NVidia-specific features you may or may not care about, versus a 20% increase in cost.

The GTX 770 posted by mfenn is another 15-20% faster than the GTX 760. It's a good pick if you take the rebate into account - it ends up being the same performance per dollar as the GTX 760.

I would go with the GTX 770 for $300 after MIR. I would not recommend a 270x at $200 since you can still grab a 7870 for $150 or less (after MIR). And as already mentioned, the 270x is just an overclocked 7870. Most 7870s overclock very nicely so it's a waste of $$$ to pay extra for the 270x.

Where? The lowest I see in stock at newegg is $200, $170 AR and they both have crappy coolers compared to 270X Gaming.

Sapphire 7870 was in stock when I checked yesterday, I think it came out to be $145 after $15 MIR.

If those are the only choices at the moment, stay away from that XFX double D. I have one of those and it is by far the hottest 7870 I have, runs hotter than my reference 7970. However I do have to admit, it is pretty silent at 100% fan speed compared to any other card and I do like having Lifetime warranty.

This GIGABYTE GV-R927XOC-2GD Radeon R9 270X 2GB is a pretty good deal. Seems like it has a legit cooler, Gigabyte is a pretty decent brand, and you get a free BF4 code which is worth at least $30-40.

True, that BF4 code alone is worth about $30 on ebay. The cooler is definitely legit 😛 it's roughly as good as Asus DCII and MSI TFIV

It actually makes me want to get one myself because I am getting sick of my loud Sapphire 7870 and my smoking hot XFX 7870. The only good 7870 I have is the MSI GHz edition. I must resist the temptation though.
