I'm trying to help my son finish his gaming build. He only plays LOL on a 40" flat screen samsung tv. He still needs, of course, all the expensive hardware: cpu/mb/memory/gpu. He has case,PS & SSD. I was thinking one of the i5's ($150-225 range) but I'm not sure of the difference between all of them. And then MB/ 16GB Ram. Have no idea on GPU, but seems like a lot of positive remarks about the rx470/480. Seems like I should lean to 8gb GPU, in the $200 range, give or take. Is this overkill ? if a smaller budget would work, that would be better.

If you can afford it, a Skylake i5, 16GB DDR4, and an RX480 would make a really sweet little gaming rig, if you can afford them.

That being said, you could probably get away with a locked i5, 8GB of DDR4, and a 4GB RX480. Just note that the lower config would be less future-proof.

An i5-6600K, an 2x8GB DDR4-3000 kit, a Z170 board, and an 8GB RX 480 would be more ideal.

Note too, that we are nearly at the juncture of Kaby Lake's introduction. It has the same CPU cores as Skylake, but with an updated Media-decoding block (Which is necessary for the DRM for watching Netflix 4K streams.)

The reason that I mention that is, you might be able to find some "clearance" pricing on Skylake (6th gen) Core i5/i7 CPUs, or even complete PCs. You might also want to wait for Z270 motherboards, if you are building new.

Official release date is "Q1 2017". I don't have anything more specific than that. I'm waiting for the new locked dual-cores with HT, and/or Pentiums with HT.

So, looking at parts:

cpu: $200-225, i5/6500 skylake,
mb: $100-125, asus z170-e
ram: $75-85, gskill/16gb
gpu: $175-225, msi rx470/8gb

He's not going to OC but not sure which is the locked i5. Probably can't swing price of rx480/8gb. Would a rx480/4gb be better choice than rx470/8gb? Also, just guessing on brand names. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
