I saw a case that had a funnel that fits over the CPU heatsink and fan. Is that a good idea or is it just overelaborate.

It IS a good idea. It means that it will use more cool outside air to cool the CPU, rather than recycling interior warm air.

Those ducts are supposed to line up with mobos built to Intel standards for CPU placement. If you are an AMD person, like many here, then your CPU may or may not line up. Those ducts remind me of a scene from a Monty Python movie: " I spit in your general direction. (spoken in an awful french accent)"

If I want a duct, it'll be connected to a fan on the outer end and to the top of the CPU fan, so the air will go exactly where needed and wanted. You can get such a duct from computergate.com, et al. AFAIC, those open ducts just mess up any planned air flow pattern.
