I work with After Effects, 3DSMax, and Adobe Premiere.

I'm new to Xeon processors. My boss asked me to recommend 3D Animation / Video-Editing system back in February, but it has taken the IT department 5-6+ months to finally get back to me. They've come at me with a lot of different recommendations, but I frankly don't know the differences. My original requests were given 100% approval, but the IT department is recommending alternatives - but they don't deal in video production so I need to make sure their recommendations are grounded in reality.

The main issue at hand is the CPU:
My request - Intel Xeon E5-1680v3 3.2GHz 20MB 2133 8C CPU
IT Suggested - Intel Xeon E5-2609v4 1.7 1866 8C

Are the differences so great that I should make a deal out of this? All I see is a huge difference in GHz speeds.

That's what I call cheaping out!

E5-1680v3: 8c16T, 3.2GHz/3.8GHz turbo, $1723 MSRP.
E5-2609v4: 8c8T, 1.7GHz, no turbo, $306.00 - $310.00 MSRP.

That'll be less than half the speed. :( Unless they're recommending two of them on one board. :sneaky: You'll still have trouble with single-thread bottlenecks in that case, though.

If the IT department wants a single $300 processor, I'd suggest an i7-5820K.

How is this even being considered? For such tasks, you'll want the fastest possible system, because the most expensive component is actually you. Hardware is cheap by comparison.

Unless a Xeon is required, those $1723 would also buy you a 6950X, which has two additional cores. You could also look at the E5-2683v4. Its MSRP is a little more then the E5-1680v3, but it is a 16C/32T model... :sneaky:
