CPU for 6800ultra

I have an intel based board, socket 478, and I'm looking to get a 6800 ultra and new processor. I don't want the ultra to be limited by the cpu, and I'm not really sure what it should be at least. Do you think a 3ghz prescott is enough?

It depends on the CPU you currently have, but I would say, especially for the 6800's and the X800's, for you to get the fastest CPU your mobo (and budget) will support. Also, if I was you, I would stay away from the S478 Prescott's as they are not very good (Prescott in general is simply lackluster). Go with a Northwood P4, as it is, in my opinion, the best rev of the P4 Intel has produced.

On another note, I would also recommend that you update your BIOS before upgrading the CPU, as it can oftentimes improve performance and stability with machines.

Also, what is the mobo you are using (I.E. 875P, 865, PT800, etc)?

If you want to get the most out of your gpu and have the best gaming experience get a new mobo, a Winchester 3200+ and overclock it 😀

My motherboard is an asus with a 865p chipset. My current proccessor is a celeron 2.4ghz and I'd want to stick around 200 for a new processor.

exactly...i dont get why people are always crying about CPU/GPU limitation.

Well, I think almost any CPU will be a bottleneck on an Ultra, but the Athlon 64s would be the best CPUs to go for.

Basically get whatever the fastest CPU you can afford is. Personally, I'd just go for a 3.0Ghz Northwood and then wait a bit and go Athlon 64 unless you have the money for the switchover now. While the Prescott's are better as far as gaming performance goes, I still don't like them because of the heat issue.

Just read your later post. If you can find one, a 3.0Ghz Northwood should fit your budget and be plenty speedy for you.
