CpU for 3D Rendering

Probably in the wrong forum, but...

Not really. C2D CPUs are getting a little long in the tooth, at least if you're using them for anything demanding, and 3D rendering tends to like lots of cores. Taken together, it's a less than ideal choice - if it's the primary use of that machine, I'd sooner go for a a quad- or hex-core AMD if you can find one.

What is your budget? Even a cheap Phenom II x4 will destroy a C2D when it comes to rendering for the simple fact that it has 4 cores. A Phenom II x6 can be had for a pretty decent price as well. A current gen i5 or i7 would be the fastest, but also cost quite a bit more.

What's your budget and what software are you rendering with? C2D is pretty bad compared to most current CPU's.

no, that C2D is very bad for 3d rendering you need as many thread as you can get, get amd 8 core bulldozer or intel 2600K.
